Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC: the queen of mouldings

If you are looking for a log saw, then we have the answer to your needs: the Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC.

This saw can be considered as one of the best in its field, because of many goodies that the competition doesn’t offer. First of all, it has a really excellent and precise table feedback system, and secondly, it mounts a motor with electronic regulation and variable speed. In addition, it can be used by both right-handed and left-handed users, has a compact design and is also quite light. In summary, it is a little gem that can not miss in the workshop of any hobbyist.

  • Bore diameter of 30 mm
  • Weight of the cut-off machine: 9.6 kg
  • Model: Log saw
  • Multi-material cutting (with limits)

Construction and materials

Super-compact and lightweight, weighing just 9.6 kg, the Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC can be regarded as the featherweight of the log cutting machines. However, the manufacturer has not underestimated the robustness and quality of the materials. On the contrary, considering that the machine in question mounts a solid metal plate and a series of plastic parts in ABS, therefore able to withstand shocks.

There is the collector to connect the tube of a vacuum cleaner, while on the base there are the support feet and elevation, which make it easier to use the machine on any shelf. The precision in the cut is then favored by the presence of the side clamp, which gives you the possibility to lock on the plate strips of any size, and that can be mounted in different positions using the various holes.

The handle is ergonomic and versatile, because it allows the cut-off machine to be used by both left-handed and right-handed people. In addition, although it cannot be extended laterally, the Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC offers all the space needed for skirting boards.

The striker system is the real highlight of the product, which is why we have decided to devote a separate chapter to it.

Matching system

If you have already cut the strips to make skirting boards, you will know that there are a number of preliminary operations that take a lot of time. We are referring specifically to the measurements with the false square of the corners of the walls, the calculation of the bisector and the transfer of these values to the saw. Now these tasks will partly be a thing of the past thanks to the patented Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC measuring system.

This system allows you to set the angle and bisector without having to do any calculations. All this is done by simply using the supplied false square and the parallel or symmetrical fence integrated in the mitre saw. All things considered, this system gives you the possibility to save 70% of the time (and effort) you would normally spend on DIY. As far as values are concerned, the feedback system allows you to measure internal angles up to 68 degrees, and external angles up to a maximum of 60 degrees.

Having a symmetrical design, this Festool mitre saw allows you to work with both hands, moving to the right or left.

Before proceeding, you should know that the system in question is equipped with counter jaws. These are essential as they allow you to lock the system once the different values have been set. In short, you will avoid the risk that the bars can move during the cut, making your efforts vain and changing the angle.

  • Regardless of whether the workpieces are long or thin: the new elevation feet and the clamp guarantee secure positioning of the strips.
  • Patented, symmetrical stop system

Blade and cutting capacity

The Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC is sold with a Wood Fine Cut HW W48 blade. Reading the technical specifications, this blade can also be used with laminate and glass battens, but it was primarily created for wood and veneer. This means that it can be considered multi-material, but only up to a certain point: it is not suitable for cutting iron or steel.

On the other hand, the cut-off machine itself is not suitable for these materials, as cutting metals would produce dust that could damage the device. Secondly, this cutting-off machine would not be able to handle any sparks, which could damage the plastic parts of the machine. Returning to the blade, the 48-tooth W48 blade ensures a cut that is always precise, without burrs and without chamfering, even if you will use it on solid wood strips.

If you want to cut aluminium and plastic, you can buy the HW W60 blade for these materials separately.

We close this section reporting some important data: the machine is able to cut laths with a maximum height of 70 mm and a maximum width of 80 mm, while the blade has a cutting angle of -5 degrees.

Engine and performances

As this is a log saw, there is no need for an overly powerful motor, and in fact the Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC is fitted with a 1,150 watt motor. However, we would like to emphasise again that the device is equipped with an electronic system for adjusting the blade speed. The latter allows you to set a value from a minimum of 2,700 RPM up to a maximum of 5,200 RPM.

Opinions and conclusions

The performance with wood, glass, veneer or laminate strips is outstanding. The Festool SYM 70 RE SYMMETRIC, in short, is a top-of-the-range machine that is designed for making and cutting skirting boards and skirting boards. What’s more, it is anything but complex to use, as is always the case with the Festool-designed and patented striker system.
