Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ – powerful and durable

Today we will discover together the review of the Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+, a radial cut-off machine with many positive qualities.

Let’s start immediately from a premise, very important: this is not a professional machine but for hobbyists, so it has some “edges” to put on record. On the other hand, at a price like this, it is very difficult to find other cut-off machines of this level. We refer to the power of the engine and the quality of materials, which make it performant and durable.

This is a multi-material device, accessorized with a blade that can cut wood, iron, aluminum and steel. It is especially with soft metals that gives the best of itself, while with the wood sins just a bit ‘in precision. Not to be alarmed, however, as you can buy the appropriate blade for wood and solve any problem!

  • Multi-material: including Japanese blade with tungsten carbide (TCT) tips for cutting steel, aluminum, wood with nails, plastic and more
  • Powerful: Optimised 2000W blade speed change system increases motor and blade life, allowing you to cut a wide variety of materials with ease
  • Accurate: Laser-guided precision cutting, grooving capability, 300 mm sliding capability, 0°-45° bevel and 50°-50° bevel angle settings, enabling all common cutting angles to be achieved
  • R255-TCT multi-material blade (28 teeth) included
  • 3 year limited warranty

Structure and materials

The Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ is a radial cut-off machine. This means that you can use it to make cross cuts by moving the arm that houses the blade. This feature is very important, because it allows you to get a better penetration on materials, sinking the blade with greater precision.

As for the structure, there are several peculiarities to highlight. First of all, this Evolution mitre saw has two convenient side handles, which will make your life easier when carrying the device. In addition, it has the connector for the chip vacuum, and in the package you will also find a small bag to use in its absence. The height of the neck of the arm and of the stop are greater than the average: in short, you have the possibility to cut pieces with a higher thickness.

Other features to highlight? There are quick release clamps, while the wire is 3 meters long, which allows you to use it without connecting it to an extension cord. The clamps are really efficient, and they greatly improve the clamping of the pieces, therefore also the quality of the final result.

Blade and cutting capacity

Let’s start right with the cutting capacity, as the Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ can sink up to a maximum of 30 centimeters for straight cuts. If you adjust it with a certain angle, or if you use it for bevel cuts, the value might change, starting from a minimum of 21 cm. You don’t have to worry though, as the instruction booklet has all the exact values.

As for the blade, it is a disc made of Japanese steel with 28 teeth. As anticipated, it is a multi-cut and therefore can saw not only wood, but also plastic, aluminum, iron, copper and mild steel. The penetration in the materials is excellent, thanks to the tungsten carbide teeth (TCT). These are peculiarities that make it excellent for hobby use in carpentry and DIY.

As we mentioned in the data sheet at the beginning of the review, the blade has a diameter of 25.5 cm and a hole to mount it 25.4 mm wide. This is the measure used by the Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+: remember this when you buy replacement blades or those specifically for cutting wood or concrete, to avoid problems of incompatibility.

Finally, the depth of cut (i.e. the depth of the blade in the rail) can be adjusted from 0 up to -6.5 centimeters.

Blade tilt and bevel

This Evolution mitre saw gives you the possibility to tilt the blade to the right, from a minimum of 0 degrees (starting position), up to a maximum of 45 degrees. The mechanism of unlocking, locking and adjusting the arm is really easy to use, and it is also very precise: a feature that we don’t find in all the mitre saws in this price range.

Of course, you can also make bevel cuts by turning the saw either to the right or to the left. In this case the maximum values you can reach are -50 degrees and 50 degrees, and again this is slightly above average. We assure you that the quality of the angle finishes is excellent, so much so that this machine is often used in semi-professional settings, although it still remains a hobbyist tool.

Engine and performance

The possibility to work materials of medium hardness depends on the great power of the 2,000 watt motor, considering that the averages in this price range hardly exceed 1,800 watts. Of course, the performance on different materials depends also and above all on the blade that you will mount on the cut-off machine. On the other hand, having a more powerful motor on your side means you can count on a much more versatile tool.

The performance on metal alloys such as mild steel, aluminum, copper and iron is amazing, since the blade penetrates these materials as if they were butter. For wood you’ll probably have to buy a special blade, especially if you are a perfectionist and do not like to settle. If, on the other hand, you buy the Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ for small jobs without too much pretension, then you’ll be very satisfied with its performance with wood.

Safety systems

When it comes to safety systems, this radial cut-off saw model has a convenient blade cover on the front of the blade, which slides up when you start cutting material. This way, it doesn’t affect your cutting performance in the slightest, while also protecting you from accidental contact with the saw. The Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ is of course equipped with a dual-button start system, meaning that you’ll have to press the middle button and the front lever in the arm handle at the same time to activate the cut.

Comparison table

In this table we have summarized and compared 4 Evolution Power Tools radial cut-off saws in order to give you a more complete view of the main differences and allow you to decide which one is the most suitable for your needs.

Opinions and conclusions

In our opinion the Evolution Power Tools R255SMS+ comes close to perfection, always if you keep in mind that this is a non-professional device. The cost is competitive, the cutting performance with metals excellent, and the structure really solid. By changing the blades, then, you can cut with great precision all materials.
